Before we get there, shut the water off
Most of the damage in a plumbing emergency happens in the minutes before anyone finds the valve. Two minutes now saves a finished basement.
Find the main shutoff
In most Florissant ranches and split-levels it is on the basement wall facing the street, often near the water meter. Turn clockwise until it stops.
Kill power if water is near it
Finished basements put outlets, furnaces and panels at floor level. If water is near any of them, shut the breaker before you go down.
